St. Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226) is the patron saint of animals and the ecology. The Feast of St. Francis is held on October 4, where in the spirit of this patron saint, the faithful have their pets blessed.
Born in Assisi, Italy in 1182, St. Francis lived and preached a life of poverty and love of God to all men. St. Francis founded the religious Order of the Franciscans; with St. Clare, he founded the Order of the Poor Clares: and the Third Order for lay people.
